The Taipei Language
Institute (TLI) is one of the oldest language training schools for
studying Chinese on both sides of the Taiwan Strait.
For nearly half century TLI has provided language training for
students from all professions and walks of life, including college
students, professors, authors, journalists, businessmen, diplomats,
and missionaries. Their
contribution and achievement is the pride of TLI.

TLI’s
world-renowned Chinese language instruction program has now come to
the heart and cultural capital of the United States – New York City!
I am glad to announce that the TLI-MLC
Chinese Language Center in New York joins TLI’s
schools in Taiwan,
Beijing, Shanghai, Tokyo, and
Santa Clara in incorporating TLI’s half century of
teaching methodology, study materials and course design.
Chinese is
the language of the 21st Century.

Philosophy
China
is becoming one of major player in the global community. Thus, Chinese
has become an essential language for the 21st century.
Mastering Chinese language is essential to become a dynamic member of
the new economic era. How the students achieve this goal in a
short period of time becomes very important.
At TLI-MLC, we provide a warm Chinese learning environment and
personal attention to each student. We continually improve our
curriculum, carefully select our instructors and periodically audit
every class’s progress to make sure we provide a high-quality and
efficient language education.

Our
Teaching Methods
Metropolitan Language Center uses the
Interactive Approach in all its language class.
Our
private/small
classes allow instructors to devote more attention to each
student. With personal attention and more opportunities to
communicate with other students and your instructors, you will find
that you will progress very quickly.
Students speak and
read in Chinese language from the very first class. Every class
is lively and interactive and students have maximum opportunities to
practice their new language skills.
And, through a variety of social and cultural activities help
students with a better understanding of Chinese language and culture.
All
Chinese instructors at TLI-MLC are college graduates, native speakers
of Mandarin, and are required to attend a TLI Chinese Teacher Training
Course. The course requires teachers-in-training to attend 36 hours of
classes on TLI methodology for teaching Chinese to foreign students.
Upon completion of this section of the course, participants are
required to take an oral and a written test. Successful applicants
must then undergo a further ten hours of intensive training to
reinforce their grounding in the basics of TLI teaching methodology.
TLI-MLC's
experienced staff and teachers always offer personal attention to each
student -- and our students tell us that they love the friendly
environment at our educational establishment. Learning Chinese
language is now an active, rewarding and surprisingly enjoyable
experience.
Private lessons/small groups are the most
effective way to learn a new language. The TLI-MLC Chinese language
curriculum is extensive yet fun to learn.

Our
Program Offerings
TLI-MLC
offers separate, flexible programs in Chinese Mandarin that help
students achieve their individual language-learning goals.
Different teaching techniques and classroom activities are used at
each stage of a student's program.
We
have four major programs as follows:

Practical
Chinese Program
These programs divided into three major levels. Enrollment is open throughout the year.
There are three types of classes given.
Individual
classes are a more personalized, highly intensive form of
instruction allowing students to progress at their own pace. These
classes are completely flexible with regard to scheduling and
curriculum. Students have more freedom to choose materials and design
their own study programs.
Group
classes offered in terms according to our school calendar and
each term consists three months instruction. The size of a group class
is from five to ten students. Regular group classes are offered 2
days/week, 2 hours/day, morning, afternoon and evening. Small group
classes of two to four students may start and stop any time according
to the student(s).
The demand for group classes is greater for beginners and
lower-intermediate students. Group classes provide a lively,
interactive atmosphere where a broad range of classroom activities
gives students many opportunities to practice the language together.
External
Classes are designed for professionals who have little time
available to spend studying a language. These classes allow them to
take a minimum number of hours from their busy workday to devote to
learning Chinese. In TLI-MLC's external program, students study
one-on-one with a private instructor at their office or home, who
designs a course of language study based on their needs, interests and
background.
On
the first day of school, all students take a written and oral
placement examination to determine their level of English language
proficiency. Students
must pass a written and oral examination to complete the current level
study and/or enter the next level of class.

Customized
Corporate Program
Globalization
is making it necessary for companies to have their employees trained
in a second language. The Customized Corporate Program provides
international corporations and agencies with the opportunity to do so.
The course is designed to meet the language needs and specific
interests of each individual company.

Extracurricular
Activities & Cultural Classes
TLI-MLC may
organize a variety of social and cultural activities that are designed
to suit the interests of the students and to expose them to different
aspects of Chinese culture. These activities may include lectures,
Chinese film showings, parties, sporting activities, excursions to
historical sites, and trips to attend cultural performances.
Lectures/demonstrations and classes in specialized skills may be
arranged for interested students, such as have included Chinese
painting, calligraphy, cooking, tea-making, porcelain-making, and
paper-cutting. In addition, TLI-MLC encourages its students to
participate in various international speech and debate competitions
allowing foreign students demonstrate their Chinese language skills.

Youth
Summer Study Tour
TLI-MLC offers
several summer study tours for youths. Its mission is to improve
Chinese language skills and cultural awareness for youths by providing
an intensive study program in a pleasant atmosphere. The program
includes Mandarin classes, Cultural classes, Field Trips, and weekend
excursions.
