CHINESE LANGUAGE

Beginning Study

Oral drills are emphasized in order to develop speaking and listening skills; special attention is given to the pronunciation of the Chinese tonal system; and students follow a set curriculum using TLI teaching materials designed to build a solid foundation in the language.

Intermediated Study

Class discussions give students an opportunity to begin using their Chinese in a wide variety of everyday situations. In addition, a greater proportion of class time is devoted to developing reading and writing skills. At the high-intermediate level, students are given greater freedom to design their own curricula, and may select from a wide variety of classes and study materials. To ensure that students understand the context of the language they are studying, Chinese history and culture are integrated into the curriculum starting at this level.

Advanced Study

Class debates and discussions are used to broaden student's range of vocabulary, and literature and newspaper reading help students to develop expertise in particular subjects of their choosing. Students are able to pursue in-depth study of specific subjects of their choosing and may use either TLI materials or those published elsewhere.
